In a major move to modernize India’s rail booking experience, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) officially launched the beta version of its revamped website at 21:00 hrs on July 15, 2026. This new portal is designed to provide a seamless, clutter-free, and significantly faster ticketing experience for millions of passengers across the country.
The launch follows a collaborative effort involving students from the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, who provided key suggestions to Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the difficulties faced by users on the older platform.
Key Improvements in the Beta Version
The new interface is a response to years of user feedback regarding slow navigation and complex booking steps. The major upgrades include:
Removal of Distractions: The website has eliminated unnecessary captchas, intrusive pop-ups, flashing graphics, and other elements that previously hampered the user experience.
Unified Seat Availability: Passengers can now view seat availability across all classes on a single screen, eliminating the need to check each category individually.
Simplified Booking Process: The number of steps required to complete a booking has been significantly reduced.
Faster Repeat Bookings: Users can now save passenger details, making future bookings quicker and more efficient.
A Modernized Passenger Reservation Engine
Beyond the website’s “look and feel,” the Indian Railways is working on a parallel, large-scale project to overhaul the decades-old Passenger Reservation Engine. This backend system, which powers various train booking applications, is being upgraded to handle higher traffic volumes—reportedly capable of processing over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute.
Officials have noted that because this system upgrade requires constant uptime to keep existing services operational, the full-scale integration will be rolled out in phases. A fully functional, final version of the portal is expected to be available in the coming weeks.
How to Access the Beta Website
Rail passengers are encouraged to visit the new portal to experience the changes and provide feedback, which will be instrumental in refining the final version.

As of 2026, the IRCTC website handles an average of approximately 14.5 lakh ticket bookings daily, making this one of the most critical digital infrastructure updates for the Indian public.
