Former Karnataka CM S M Krishna Passes Away
Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, a distinguished Indian politician and former Chief Minister of Karnataka, passed away at his Bengaluru residence early Tuesday morning at the age of 92. Krishna’s political career spanned over six decades, during which he held several key positions, including External Affairs Minister and Governor of Maharashtra.
Political Career and Contributions
Krishna began his political journey in 1962, winning the Maddur Vidhana Sabha seat as an independent candidate. He later joined the Indian National Congress (INC), serving as a Member of Parliament from the Mandya constituency and holding ministerial roles under Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. In 1999, Krishna became the Chief Minister of Karnataka, a tenure marked by significant economic reforms and infrastructural development. He was instrumental in promoting Bengaluru as a global information technology hub, earning the city its reputation as the “Silicon Valley of India.”
Krishna’s administration focused on modernizing Bengaluru’s infrastructure, attracting foreign investment, and fostering a business-friendly environment. His efforts were pivotal in transforming the city’s global image and economic landscape. After serving as Chief Minister until 2004, he was appointed Governor of Maharashtra, a position he held until 2008. Subsequently, he served as India’s External Affairs Minister from 2009 to 2012, playing a crucial role in shaping the country’s foreign policy.
Later Years and Legacy
In 2017, after over 45 years with the INC, Krishna resigned from the party, citing a lack of recognition for mass leaders. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) the same year. Earlier this year, he was honored with the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, acknowledging his extensive contributions to public service.
Krishna’s legacy is characterized by his visionary leadership and dedication to progress. His initiatives in urban development and governance have left an indelible mark on Karnataka and India as a whole. He is survived by his family, who have requested privacy during this time of mourning.
The nation remembers S M Krishna as a transformative leader whose efforts significantly contributed to India’s development, particularly in elevating Bengaluru to a prominent position on the global stage.
