Pune, March 16, 2025 – JSPM College of Engineering, a prominent institution under the Jayawant Shikshan Prasarak Mandal (JSPM) group, continues to make headlines as a hub of academic excellence and groundbreaking innovation in Pune, Maharashtra. Known for its commitment to fostering technical education and research, the college has solidified its reputation as one of the leading engineering institutes in the region.
A Legacy of Excellence
Located in multiple campuses across Pune, including the well-known Rajarshi Shahu College of Engineering in Tathawade and the Hadapsar campus, JSPM College of Engineering has been a cornerstone of technical education since its inception in 2001. Founded by Prof. T.J. Sawant, the institution has grown from offering just three courses with an intake of 150 students to educating over 4,500 students across various engineering disciplines today. Affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the college offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering.
Recent Achievements: Water-Powered Bike Steals the Spotlight
One of the standout moments for JSPM College this year came in February 2025, when Team AquaDrove from the Hadapsar campus clinched the first prize of ₹2 lakh at the Innovation Foundation’s National Hackathon, Innovate U Techathon 2.0. The team, composed of talented engineering students, developed an innovative water-powered bike system—a sustainable alternative to petrol-powered vehicles. This breakthrough project not only showcased the ingenuity of JSPM students but also highlighted the institution’s focus on addressing real-world challenges through technology. The victory has been widely celebrated, positioning JSPM as a leader in fostering eco-friendly engineering solutions.
Collaborations and Global Outreach
JSPM College of Engineering has also been strengthening its global ties. In 2024, the Rajarshi Shahu College of Engineering (RSCOE) campus in Tathawade partnered with Purdue University’s Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program. This collaboration aims to enhance experiential learning and community engagement for students. Dr. William Oakes, Assistant Dean for Experiential Learning at Purdue, visited the campus and inspired students and faculty to tackle real-world issues through engineering. Such initiatives underscore JSPM’s commitment to blending academic rigor with practical impact.
Campus Life and Infrastructure
The JSPM campuses are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including high-speed Wi-Fi, modern laboratories, smart classrooms, and industry-grade machinery. The serene environment of the Tathawade campus, located along the Mumbai-Pune bypass highway, provides an ideal setting for learning and innovation. Beyond academics, the college encourages a vibrant student life through technical clubs, cultural events, and competitions like TechnoCHILL, organized in collaboration with the Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE).
Overcoming Challenges
Despite its successes, JSPM has faced challenges in the past. In October 2023, a massive fire and series of explosions caused by illegal gas refilling near the Tathawade campus damaged several buses and created panic in the vicinity. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the situation was swiftly brought under control. The incident served as a reminder of the need for stringent safety measures, which the institution has since prioritized.
Looking Ahead
As JSPM College of Engineering continues to evolve, its focus remains on preparing students for the future. With a strong placement record—over 640 offers for 756 students in the 2018-19 academic year alone—and a curriculum designed to meet industry demands, the college is a preferred choice for aspiring engineers. The recent elevation of the JSPM Group of Institutes to private university status in 2022 further amplifies its potential to shape the next generation of innovators.
From pioneering sustainable technologies to fostering international collaborations, JSPM College of Engineering Pune stands as a beacon of progress in the ever-evolving landscape of technical education. As it moves forward, the institution is poised to leave an indelible mark not just in Pune, but on the global stage.
