New Delhi — As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day, it’s important for every citizen to know the proper rules for displaying the Indian national flag. The Flag Code of India, 2002, and recent amendments provide clear guidelines to ensure the tricolor is always shown with dignity and respect.

Day and Night Hoisting Now Permitted

In a significant change, a 2022 amendment to the Flag Code now allows for the national flag to be flown day and night. Previously, the flag had to be lowered at sunset. The new rule states that the flag can be kept hoisted 24/7, provided it is properly illuminated after dark. This change applies to public, private, and educational institutions.

Key Flag-Hoisting Protocols

Sunrise to Sunset: While day and night hoisting is allowed, the traditional protocol of flying the flag from sunrise to sunset on public buildings and in open spaces remains in effect.

Hoisting vs. Unfurling: There is a distinct difference between the ceremonies on Independence Day and Republic Day. On Independence Day (August 15), the flag is hoisted from the bottom of the flagpole to the top, symbolizing India’s freedom from colonial rule. On Republic Day (January 26), the flag is already secured at the top of the pole and is unfurled, representing the nation’s democratic journey under its own constitution.

Proper Care: The flag must always be in a clean and undamaged condition. A torn or soiled flag should not be displayed. When hoisted, it must be done briskly, and when lowered, it should be done slowly and with dignity.

Position of Honor: The Indian flag must always be in the position of honor. No other flag, garland, or object should be placed higher than or above the national flag. It should never be allowed to touch the ground, floor, or trail in water.

Penalties for Disrespect

Misuse or disrespect of the national flag can lead to penalties under Indian law. The Flag Code is designed to ensure the tricolor, a symbol of national pride, is always treated with the utmost reverence.
