On August 1, 2025, Shirish Gavas, co-creator of the beloved YouTube channel Red Soil Stories, passed away in Goa after a prolonged battle with a brain tumor. He was in his 30s.
Shirish, originally from Mumbai, alongside his wife Pooja Gavas, gained widespread recognition for showcasing the rustic charm of rural Konkan through their YouTube channel. The couple, who lost their city jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic, made the courageous decision to return to their native village in the Konkan region.
Red Soil Stories: A Journey from Survival to Global Inspiration
Armed with a second-hand camera, Shirish and Pooja launched Red Soil Stories, a channel dedicated to celebrating traditional cooking, farming, and forgotten customs of the Konkan coast. Their authentic and unfiltered videos, featuring meals cooked on a chulha, rice harvests, and intimate glimpses into village life, resonated deeply with audiences worldwide.
What began as a means of survival evolved into a gentle movement, accumulating over 4 lakh subscribers and attracting viewers from more than 40 countries. For many, Red Soil Stories became a window into a more grounded way of living, offering hope, warmth, and a sense of identity.
A Legacy of Earth, Food, and Love
Shirish, who chronicled much of their life through the lens, had been undergoing treatment in Goa for several months. His passing is a profound loss not only for his wife, Pooja, and their one-year-old child but also for his devoted audience.
The Konkan region, once merely a backdrop, found its voice through Red Soil Stories. With Shirish’s passing, that voice now echoes with memories of earth, food, love, and one man’s dream to illuminate it all.
