Mumbai Metro Line 4 Achieves Major Milestone with 58-Meter Steel Span Installation

Mumbai, India – August 10, 2025 – The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) today announced a significant step forward in the construction of Metro Line 4, connecting Wadala to Kasarvadavli, with the successful installation of a 58-meter-long steel span over the bustling Pantnagar-Ghatkopar bus stand in Ghatkopar East. This crucial development marks a major milestone for the 32.3 km elevated corridor, which is now reported to be 84.5 percent complete.
The impressive 450-tonne, 3.1-meter-high span, meticulously constructed from five steel girders, was hoisted into position over two nights to minimize disruption to the city’s heavy traffic. The complex operation proceeded despite challenging conditions, including heavy monsoon rains, continuous traffic flow on the adjacent Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road, and limited working space due to the proximity of the Somaiya nullah.
To execute this intricate engineering feat, MMRDA deployed two massive cranes, one with a 700-metric-tonne capacity and another with a 500-metric-tonne capacity, along with standby cranes of 500 and 80 tonnes. The installation involved the coordinated efforts of over 100 workers, safety staff, and engineers, further supported by more than 50 trained traffic wardens who managed the flow of vehicles during the operation.
An MMRDA official highlighted the inherent engineering difficulties posed by the site, with an operational bus station directly beneath the span and uninterrupted traffic on abutting roads. “It was important to coordinate between teams since space was tight and movement of equipment had to be carefully planned,” the official stated, emphasizing the meticulous planning and execution required.
The MMRDA confirmed that this installation is among the final major structural works in this section of Metro Line 4. Remaining tasks primarily include track laying, system installation, and station interior works. The project had previously experienced delays due to land acquisition challenges and disruptions caused by the global pandemic.
Once commissioned, Metro Line 4 is expected to significantly enhance east-west connectivity across Mumbai. The newly installed steel girder will carry the elevated tracks over the Pantnagar bus station and form a vital part of the viaduct, linking key points along the corridor. “This milestone prepares the route to be integrated with other metro lines later, making it a larger network for the metro system of Mumbai,” an official added, underscoring the long-term vision for an interconnected public transport system.
