Pune, March 15, 2025 – A senior citizen in Pune is grappling with distress after receiving a staggering water bill demand of ₹10.76 lakh from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), sparking outrage and raising concerns about the city’s water billing system. The issue, highlighted on social media by local activist Brijmohan Patil (

) on X, has drawn attention to potential discrepancies and inefficiencies in PMC’s water supply department.

The bill, shared in an image on X, shows a notice addressed to the senior citizen, stating “Your Water Tax Arrears As on 10/76,059 Click to Pay Online.” However, the exact amount due is not specified, leading to confusion and panic. Patil’s post, dated March 14, 2025, described the senior citizen’s plight, noting that the enormous sum has caused health concerns, including rising blood pressure and extreme anxiety. Despite repeated complaints to the PMC commissioner and other officials, no action has been taken, leaving the individual in a state of despair.
“This is outrageous. The senior citizen’s life has been turned upside down by this bill. The PMC must investigate and resolve this immediately,” Patil wrote, tagging the post with #Pune and #PuneNews to amplify the issue.
The incident has reignited discussions about the PMC’s water supply and billing processes, managed under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act of 1949. The PMC’s Water Supply Department, tasked with providing safe and adequate water for drinking, cooking, and other needs, has faced criticism for billing errors and poor grievance redressal. According to the PMC’s official website, the department operates from Shivajinagar, but residents have frequently complained about opaque billing practices and lack of timely responses.
The timing of this issue coincides with an ongoing hearing by the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority (MWRRA) regarding Pune’s water supply standards and population coverage, suggesting broader systemic challenges in the city’s municipal services. Critics argue that such billing errors disproportionately affect vulnerable groups, including senior citizens, who may lack the resources or knowledge to navigate bureaucratic hurdles.

Local residents and activists have called for an immediate investigation into the ₹10.76 lakh bill, urging the PMC to clarify the calculation, waive any unjust charges, and establish a transparent mechanism to prevent similar incidents. “If this can happen to a senior citizen, it can happen to anyone. The PMC needs to act swiftly and ensure accountability,” said Vinayak Argade, a user who commented on Patil’s post, pointing out the ambiguity in the bill’s “as on” notation.
As of 12:38 PM IST on March 15, 2025, the PMC has not issued an official statement regarding the complaint. However, the issue continues to gain traction on social media, with citizens demanding justice for the affected senior citizen and systemic reforms in Pune’s water billing and supply infrastructure.
