Pune Woman Forced to Live Under Staircase by In-Laws, Dies by Suicide
A 25-year-old woman in Pune died by suicide after she was allegedly forced to live under the staircase of her in-laws’ house for three days. The woman, identified as Swati Shinde, was married to a man named Pramod Shinde in 2021.
According to the police, the incident took place on August 29, when Swati’s in-laws allegedly locked her up under the staircase and refused to let her out. They also allegedly abused her verbally and physically.
On the third day, Swati was found hanging from the ceiling of the staircase. She was rushed to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead.
The police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against Swati’s in-laws. They are currently on the run.
The incident has sparked outrage in the city, with many people demanding justice for Swati. A candlelight vigil was held in her memory on Tuesday night.
