Shocking Claims: Dalit Girls Accuse Pune Police of Casteism, Justice Delayed

Pune, 4th August 2025 –  A serious controversy has erupted in Pune after three Dalit girls accused a female police officer of using casteist insults and treating them badly during questioning. The incident has drawn strong criticism from political leaders and activists, who say the Pune police are not taking the matter seriously.
One of the girls involved had reportedly come to Pune seeking refuge after facing difficulties in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. She was staying with three other girls when they were all called in for questioning by the police. During this inquiry, the girls claim the female officer used offensive caste-based language, causing them significant emotional distress.
Despite the girls reporting the incident, no official police complaint (FIR) has been registered. This has led to outrage, with MLA Rohit Pawar stating that such behavior by law enforcement undermines the very fabric of society. He has demanded immediate action against the officer and criticized the police for not even registering the girls’ complaints, forcing them to go from station to station.
The situation escalated when prominent Dalit leaders Sujat Ambedkar and Anjali Ambedkar, along with Rohit Pawar and many activists, staged a late-night protest at the Pune Police Commissionerate. They stayed outside until early morning, pushing for an FIR to be filed.
However, the police responded with a brief written note, not an FIR. In this note, they stated that the alleged incident happened in a private room, not a public place, and that there was no “concrete evidence” to support the charges of atrocity. They also claimed the complaint lacked strong enough grounds to be filed under the SC/ST Atrocities Act.
This explanation deeply angered the girls and activists, who tore up the letter in frustration. The police’s refusal to register a case, despite intense pressure, has sparked speculation that political or institutional influence might be preventing the FIR.
As public attention on this matter grows, all eyes are now on how the Pune police and local authorities will address the increasing demands for accountability and justice.
