It is also believed that Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman on this day after defeating the demon king Ravana.

The term “Gudi” refers to a decorated pole that is erected outside homes on the day of the festival. The pole is made of a bamboo stick, which is adorned with a bright cloth, flowers, and neem leaves, and is topped with a copper or silver vessel called a kalash. The Gudi symbolizes victory and good luck and is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring prosperity and happiness into the home.

Celebrations

Gudi Padwa is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm across Maharashtra and other parts of India. People clean their homes and decorate them with rangolis and flowers to welcome the New Year. Women wear new sarees and jewelry, and families gather to perform traditional rituals and puja.

The day begins with the installation of the Gudi outside homes. The kalash on the top of the Gudi is filled with holy water, mango leaves, and a coconut. The Gudi is then worshipped and offerings of sweets, flowers, and prasad are made.

In the afternoon, a special sweet called “shrikhand puri” is prepared and served to family and friends. People also exchange gifts and greetings, and children are given pocket money called “shagun” to mark the beginning of the new year.
